Driving Directions

This 7.33-acre park was developed on land purchased from the Joshua Reed Giddings Family in 1954, and dedicated that same year. Although originally named Loma Alta Park, it was later renamed the Clarence H. Thurber Park and Giddings Memorial Picnic Area in 1959, and in 1960, renamed Loma Alta Park. In 1975, the County purchased the 10-acre property known as “lower Loma Alta Park, and that area houses tennis courts, an equestrian arena and a Community Garden. This “lower park” was dedicated by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich in 1983.The park is home to the Dr. Clarence H. Thurber Community Building and the Giddings Grove Picnic Area.

The 13,500 square-foot gymnasium was dedicated in October 2003, and in 2008, a new play area with ADA access was completed, as was the renovation of the pool. In 2009, a new picnic shelter was installed, as well as a shade structure at the Loma Community Garden. In 2010, the historic Community Building has been undergoing a total renovation.

The history of the Mount Lowe area where the park is located goes back to the Gabrielino Indians who, observing the frequency and regularity of fires in the mountain valleys, called it “valley of smokes.” By the early 1800’s, settlers were passing through the Altadena foothills and noted their beauty, as well as the panoramic views of the Los Angeles basin.
