Girl Power was in full effect recently at the Hacienda Heights Community Center!

The Department of Parks and Recreation’s Third Annual Girls Empowerment Conference was attended by more than 70 young girls ages 10 to 15 from parks throughout the region.

The Oct. 21 event theme was, “Educate, Inspire and Empower,” which was supported by the social media hashtag #strongerthanyouthinklaco. Our very own Norma E. Garcia set the tone of the one-day conference by inspiring the young women. She described her personal story about how she climbed the ranks in 2016 to become the first woman to serve as Chief Deputy Director in the history of the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Girls in attendance participated in three exciting breakout sessions that provided information related to goal-setting, self-defense and artistic vision. Live entertainment by local songwriter and singer Christine Noel encouraged the girls to feel empowered through her rendition of the hit song, “Roar.”

This event was a day of enlightenment and sisterhood for so many young women, and it will continue to grow and inspire the next generation year after year.
