The County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors Awards Architect Contract For the Proposed Whittier Aquatics Center
WHITTIER. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approves the consultant services agreement with NAC Architecture Inc. for the Whittier Aquatics Center project. This is an important step to provide a much-needed recreational swimming facility to the West Whittier-Los Nietos community.
The proposed Whittier Aquatic Center will be located at Pioneer High School, 10800 Ben Avon Street, Whittier, in the unincorporated community of West Whittier-Los Nietos. The facility will include a pool building with offices and classrooms; an Olympic-size 50-meter by 25-yard competitive swimming pool; a 25-meter by 25-yard practice pool, and related improvements. Proposed programs include various water exercises, swim lessons, recreational aquatics, junior lifeguard training, synchronized swimming, water polo, and diving.
“The residents of Unincorporated West Whittier deserve a world-class aquatic center, and that’s what I plan on delivering,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “I look forward to reviewing the architectural designs in the coming months to ensure that they meet the needs of my constituents and make the entire community proud.”
The initial funding of this capital project includes about $5.4 million from Proposition A Safe Neighborhood Parks County Excess Fun and $19 million from the Utility User Tax, allocated by County Board of Supervisor, Janice Hahn. As part of the Board of Supervisors’ approval, a Youth Employment Plan is incorporated.
“We are grateful to County Board of Supervisor, Janice Hahn’s leadership in supporting this aquatic facility that will serve the families of West Whittier-Los Nietos,” said Department of Parks and Recreation Director John Wicker. “We look forward to offering an array of swimming recreation and programs.”
The Department of Parks and Recreation will operate and maintain this new aquatic facility. The Department will enter an option agreement with the Whittier Union High School District to establish a mutually beneficial partnership.
The unincorporated West Whittier-Los Nietos area, located in the Fourth District, has a population of 26,500 residents, none of whom live near a public pool. The nearest County operated aquatic facility is located 7.4 miles away.
