The Santa Catalina Island Interpretive Center is nestled in a large canyon at an elevation of five hundred feet. The center features recordings of whales, dolphins and sea lions, and visitors can also learn about kelp forests and ocean currents.  There are docent tours along with school and group tours (by reservation only). The 1,200 square foot Interpretive Center at Avalon Canyon is operated by the Catalina Island Conservancy, whose Education department offices are located in the building. The museum-quality displays feature a theme entitled PURE (Protect, Understand, Renew, Explore) Catalina. Interactive displays that offer information regarding the Catalina Island Conservancy’s mission, goals and projects. Also available is a series of video presentations, including the Bald Eagle restoration project, Bison repatriation and Conservancy-themed video.
