COMMUNITY MEETING AT WHITTIER NARROWS RECREATION AREA

Public can learn about new trails being opened, and provide feedback on potential improvements.

Are you an equestrian, boarder or trail user? Do you live in South El Monte, Whittier, Pico Rivera and surrounding communities? Or are you simply interested in open space and recreational opportunities in Los Angeles County?

If you fall into any of these categories, you are invited to a June 15 community meeting to be held at 10 a.m. at the stable grounds at Whittier Narrows Recreation Area (12191 Rooks Road, Whittier, CA 90601). There, you can learn more about new trails being opened and provide feedback on improvements to the trail system and stables.

VOLUNTEERS ENJOY GARDENING FUN AT 3RD ANNUAL CESAR CHAVEZ LEARNING DAY AT WHITTIER NARROWS RECREATION AREA

On Saturday, March 30, 2013, volunteers came out to celebrate Cesar Chavez week at the 3rd Annual Cesar Chavez ‚ÄúService Learning Day at Whittier Narrows Recreation Area.  Co-sponsored by Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina, the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation and the San Gabriel Valley Conservation Corps (SGVCC), volunteers learned about servicing their communities through environmental education and conservation.  Workshops were taught and work stations organized by representatives from EarthWorks Farm and Community Garden and the Farmworker Institute of Education & Leadership Development.  Adults and children learned about composting, weeding, vertical-gardening (Gardens designated with beads on a string), recycling, arts and crafts and more.  Coca Cola, Inc. presented the San Gabriel Valley Conservation Corps (SGVCC) with a check for $50,000 to fund the farm and the day concluded with a free lunch, great music and games!   Dignitaries in attendance included: California State Senator for District 24, Dr. Ed Hernandez, O.D. and 1st District Board Office Assistant Field Director and Community Press, Deputy Angie Castro. 

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON TO INSTALL NEW WIRING ON TRANSMISSION STRUCTURES AT WHITTER NARROWS RECREATION AREA

On Monday, January 21, through Saturday, February 2, 2013, Southern California Edison, as part of its Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project, will begin installing new electrical transmission wires (500 kilovolt) on transmission structures in the utility right-of-way corridor in South El Monte including Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, south of the Pomona Freeway (60).  The hours of construction will be approximately between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. (NOTE: This schedule is subject to change pending weather or other factors).

Helicopter operation:  A small helicopter will be used to position equipment and personnel.  There will be periods when the helicopter will hover in the project area to perform these activities. 

Traffic Interruptions: To ensure the safety of the public and project personnel, there will be brief periods of traffic interruptions.  This will be in effect for the City of South El Monte and Whittier Narrows Recreation Area.  For more information and area map please click here or call (877) 795-8787.  

 

2ND ANNUAL "HEROES IN THE SHADOWS" HOMELESS VETERAN STAND DOWN 

Join volunteers of the Vet Hunters Project:Advocates for Homeless Heroes in collaboration with Congresswoman Grace F.
