St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 is the perfect day to wear oversized hats, shamrock embroidered shirts and fun accessories, as long as they’re in the green family. Not only do you avoid getting pinched (OUCH), but it’s a part of a long tradition that gives many of us something fun to look forward to.

If you participate or prefer to be “green” with envy while so many others embark on this fun day, here’s a little history of why millions of Americans fear getting pinched and Go Green on this quirky day.

Did you know that St. Patrick’s celebrators thought wearing green made them invisible to leprechauns? The legend states that leprechauns would pinch anyone they could see (anyone not wearing green). The myth has survived hundreds of years, and to this day, some people pinch those who don’t wear green as a reminder that little mythical creatures would sneak up and pinch green-abstainers.

Today, people all over the world celebrate this Irish culture with festive celebrations. The Department of Parks and Recreation is participating, too! After all, our parks are green anyway. Below are some fun St. Patrick’s Day celebrations taking place at a County park near you:
