The County of Los Angeles would create a new regional park uniquely situated at the western end of the Puente Hills on a large industrial closed landfill site. Of the 600 acres of fill within the site boundaries, which includes the landfill slopes and flat landfill caps, approximately 117 acres of top deck fill area would be the focus over time for the majority of formal park development (or approximately 10 percent of the site’s total acreage).

On Saturday, December 5, 2015, nearly 350 people attended the grand re-opening of the newly renovated Helen Keller Park. Approximately $13 million was invested into the renovation of the 6.6 acre park including the baseball field, play area, an American with Disabilities Act – walking path, picnic tables and grills, exercise cluster, sports lighting system and landscaping. The 4,000 square-foot community center was completed in December 2014 and has been providing over 20 programs and events for the past year. The community celebrated the opening with a festive winter wonderland themed ceremony with speakers and entertainment from the local community, ribbon cutting, complimentary lunch, live band, resource vendors, game booths and of course snow. “The opening of the renovated Helen Keller Park is a milestone for the Department of Parks and Recreation and the community served by this park,” said John Wicker, the department’s acting director. “Now that the entire park is open, our dedicated staff, volunteers and partners can continue to deliver high-quality programming to a wonderful and deserving community.” This project was made possible through the partnership of several County of Los Angeles Departments including Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works.
