“Promoting the Value of Parks”
On Thursday, May 12, 2011, the 9th Annual Park Summit was welcomed at the beautiful Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. This year’s summit theme was “Promoting the Value of Parks.” More than 200 guests from all over Los Angeles County attended and enjoyed inspiring guest speakers, industry vendors and educational and promotional information at many break out sessions.
Keynote Speaker – Anita L. Defrantz, President, LA84 Foundation
Guest Speaker – Sedrick V. Mitchell, Deputy Director for External Affairs for California State Parks
Guest Speaker – Jane Adams, Executive Director of the California Park and Recreation Society
Guest Speaker – Doug Houston, Legislative Consultant of The Houston Group
Guest Speaker – Captain Steve Smith, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Parks Bureau
Guest Speaker – Ilona Volkmann, Administrator of the Regional Park and Open Space District
Special Guest – County of Los Angeles Mayor Michael D. Antonovich

Keynote Speaker – Anita L. Defrantz, President, LA84 Foundation and member of the Board of Directors of the LA84 Foundation, shared her inspirational medal accomplishments as an Olympian and how it helped create a successful youth swimming program across California and Los Angeles County.
Guest Speaker – Sedrick V. Mitchell, Deputy Director for External Affairs for California State Parks spoke about Statewide Park programs and grants.
Guest Speaker – Jane Adams, Executive Director of the California Park and Recreation Society
spoke about the upcoming 2012 CPRS Conference in Long Beach and Parks Branding.
Guest Speaker – Doug Houston, Legislative Consultant of The Houston Group
discussed the California State Budget and legislation and how it affects parks.
Guest Speaker – Captain Steve Smith, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Parks Bureau
spoke about park safety.
Guest Speaker – Ilona Volkmann, Administrator of the Regional Park and Open Space District
provided total expenditures regarding capital projects and shared grant opportunities.
Special Guest – Los Angeles County Supervisor Mayor Michael D. Antonovich was invited, but did not attend.
