Innovative Park on the Move Program Brings Summer Fun, Play and Community Connection to Altadena Youth
Super Bowl LVI Legacy Program Brings Joy & Connection to Altadena
ALTADENA, Calif. (June 8, 2026) – On Friday June 5, 2026, to celebrate the first day of summer for schools in Altadena, dozens of local children descended on a lively Park on the Move event hosted by the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation (LA County Parks) and the Play Equity Fund at the Bob Lucas Memorial Library & Literacy Center in Altadena.
Under sunny skies, youth enjoyed a wide range of interactive games, playground sports, and recreational activities designed to promote active play and community connection. The free day of fun included sports, play and healthy movement facilitated by trained LA County Parks staff, as well as music and a memorable appearance by Sam the Olympic Eagle, the official mascot of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games.
The Park on the Move van is a playground on wheels, packed with sports equipment, lawn games, a steppingstone obstacle course, balls, hula hoops, and more. The program is a legacy of Super Bowl LVI, and provided in partnership by the Los Angeles Super Bowl LVI Host Committee, LA County Parks, and the Play Equity Fund.
“The Park on the Move program shines a bright light on what a lasting community legacy can look like, while also celebrating the remarkable spirit and resilience the community of Altadena has demonstrated,” said Renata Simril, President of the Play Equity Fund. “The Park on the Move program brings to life the healing power of sports and playing together. Since Super Bowl LVI, it has brought the joy of playing in a park directly to local communities. I am grateful for our partners at LA County Parks and Recreation for helping build connection in the Altadena community.”
The Park on the Move program has focused on supporting the Altadena community during this challenging time as local parks are being repaired. The Park on the Move has brought pop-up play activities to homes, community-based organizations, businesses, and public spaces across Altadena. The program promotes joy and community well-being through play, and by building connectedness.
“The Eaton Fire continues to impact children and families after the disaster. After losing homes, places of worship, schools and parks, many youth no longer have a community connection to their friends and neighborhoods,” said Norma E. García-González, Director of the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation. “Rejuvenating children’s social and recreation ties can help with long term healing. And that’s why the ‘Park on the Move’ recreation van goes directly to youth at the Bob Lucas Memorial Library, a community organization, or other sites to give kids a few hours of uplifting sports, games, and refreshments.”
The Los Angeles Super Bowl LVI Committee has invested in supporting communities across LA County since the Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium in February of 2022. With sports and park space out of reach for many, the Park on the Move program held events across Los Angeles, and the program was able to meet families and youth in neighborhoods that historically faced significant barriers to play with an inviting ‘block party’ atmosphere.
At the library celebration, among other activities youth also played Connect Four, Giant Jenga, ring toss, and tether ball. At activations, LA County Parks staff facilitates integrated play for youth with adults. Mobile playground experiences can lead to improved social skills and provide positive outlets to relieve stress and heal from trauma. The Park on the Move program is designed to bring the power of play and physical activity directly to youth, and advance play equity by removing barriers to participation. LA County Department of Parks and Recreation provided the van, staffing and infrastructure for the program.
